Animal Control Policies

Our Policy

Due to the size and population of our park, we attract a multitude of furry woodland creatures looking for food and tasty camper treats. While we do have a growing feral cat population, we also attract many less desired guests such as skunks, opossums, raccoons and other vermin.

Large populations of these animals can contribute to the accumulation and spread of disease. Sandy Pines Recreational Community remains dedicated to fostering a safe and festive atmosphere where families create a lifetime of memories. As such we recently formalized a policy concerning the management of unsafe and dangerous wild creatures that periodically encroach upon the campground.

We developed the policy through an exhaustive and collaborative process – staying well within the strict confines of state and local law – with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, Allegan County Animal Control, Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Salem Township officials.

At select times determined by Sandy Pines Public Safety Services, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department and Allegan County Animal Control, staff will place traps at predetermined locations throughout the park. Public Safety personnel will closely monitor and document their findings in adherence to a regular schedule.

Due to our explicit obligation under Salem Township ordinance, Sandy Pines will turn over feral cats to the Allegan County Animal Shelter, which is operated by Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance, a nonprofit 501(c)3 that endeavors to identify warm and friendly adoptive homes for eligible animals. Native species such as skunks, raccoons and possums will be transported to a different location on park property and released unharmed unless obvious signs of illness and disease are detected.

A hard copy of our policy is also available by stopping by the Public Safety Services office at the main gate. Further questions on the new policy and procedures should be directed to Paul Schaaf, Security Services Manager, at Paul@SandyPines.com or by calling (616) 896-9006.
